Brief description of neonatology
The level III regional newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at The Children's Medical Center of Dayton is the region's referral center for premature and sick newborns. The NICU at Dayton Children's is a state-of-the-art, developmentally centered unit that offers a full range of newborn care including emergency and continuing care for premature and critically ill newborns.

The entire perinatal team includes:

• Neonatologists
• Neonatal nurse practitioners
• Nutritionist
• Social worker
• Speech therapist
• OT/PT
• Clinical pharmacist
• Lactation consultant

Our neonatologists are accessible 24 hours a day to provide consultation and assessment of sick newborns hospitalized at other facilities.

Our newborn transport team is available 24 hours a day and is comprised of specially trained nurses, respiratory therapists and a neonatologist. They will attend high-risk deliveries upon request and are available to pick up, stabilize and transport sick newborns after delivery to an intensive care setting.

Family-centered care and visiting baby
The NICU functions with the philosophy of family-centered care. Our nationally recognized NICU was specifically designed and engineered to provide light and sound controls that are optimal for growth and healing in newborn babies. All staff are trained to provide developmentally appropriate care. Parents and grandparents are permitted to visit any time. Big brothers and big sisters are permitted to visit if they are immunized and show no signs of illness. Parents may phone the unit at any time and are welcome to stay at their infant's bedside 24 hours a day. Room accommodations are also available just across the street at the Ronald McDonald House.

Going home
Before discharge, parents receive one-on-one discharge teaching and are invited to room in with their newborn to provide a comfortable transition to home.
